NEET Ordinance Receives Indian President’s Nod

The validity of the state held medical entrance examinations and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2016 created a lot of chaos for students and their families. Finally, the NEET ordinance that proposed to postpone the said examination received President Pranab Mukherjee’s acceptance on 24th May 2016.

NEET Postponed by One Year, Ordinance Accepted by Pranab Mukherjee

The debate all these days was with reference to state board medical entrance exams vs NEET, a medical entrance exam for MBBS and BDS. NEET Phase 1 2016 was conducted on 1st May 2016 and NEET Phase 2 2016 will be conducted on 24th July 2016 as per schedule. The ordinance passed on 20th May 2016 overruled the Supreme Courts declaration by postponing NEET by 12 months/one year. The reason why this happened is because state board students did not have adequate amount of time to prepare for NEET 2016 and the syllabus too differed. NEET is held by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The Apex Court of India in the Writ Petition (C) No(s).261/2016 on 6th MAY 2016 declared that “no examination shall be permitted to be held for admission to MBBS or BDS studies by any private college or association or any private/deemed university”.

A long discussion took place between health minister JP Nadda and the Indian President. Every aspect was taken into consideration, which lead to the ordinance acceptance being in students favour. State board medical entrance exams like MHT CET 2016 will now be valid for medical aspirants, but they can only apply for a seat in governmental colleges. Private colleges will take in students on the basis of marks scored in NEET 2016.

From next year onwards, NEET will be the only nationally recognized medical entrance examination for medical aspirants wanting to graduate as MBBS or BDS.

All’s well that ends well. Students, it is time to rejoice. Enjoy.
